Data Science for Education: Opportunities and Challenges

New sources and scales of data have increasingly become relevant to the education sector. From large-scale datasets collected by the government; click-stream data generated by various online learning platforms; and collections of unstructured text, speech, and video captured in physical learning environments. The depth and breadth of today’s data in combination with novel methodologies for their analysis have created numerous opportunities for discovery and improvement of the education system. At the same time, we are only just yet beginning to develop the necessary infrastructure and resources for this work. And, ethical questions about privacy, interpretation, and implementation are more important than ever. In this talk, I’ll be speaking about these promises and challenges of data science for education research and practice.
