Cohort 14 Leadership Stories and Knitting the Network
A longstanding Fellowship tradition, each Fellow will have the opportunity to share their leadership story, also known as a Formative Experience story, with their cohort. The programming is designed to build fellowship community, support for one another, and further develop each of our leadership capacities. Sharing our leadership stories allows us to better understand what has led each of us to do the work we do, and how we continue to be inspired to make a positive difference in education. In this session, the first fellows of your cohort will share their leadership stories, and you will have the opportunity to hear from SDP staff as well.

Making it Count: Your Role in Data Governance
As education agencies strive to make more data-informed decisions and develop and maintain sophisticated data gathering and reporting systems, the need for data governance has grown. Many of the frictions to using data in our organizations stem from data governance processes that could be improved. As data analysts and leaders, we have a critical role to play in identifying and remedying many of these challenges. In this session, LaCole Foots will share how data analysts and leaders can optimize data governance practices.

Participants will understand the key themes of data governance, formulate their key data governance challenges, hear about what data governance means across organizations and understand some tactics to address challenges.

Managing Through Organizational Upheaval
Working together and in organizations gives us the knowledge, the resources, and the motivation often to accomplish the ambitious work we undertake. However, working with others or within organizations can also be the source of many of our biggest barriers (personal or otherwise) to our goals as well.

This session for fellows in their first year is designed to help you weather the changes and challenges that may come in your respective organizations, irrespective of the form they take. We will offer our advice for staying anchored amidst challenges, collectively action plan around some challenges common to fellows, and ultimately workshop some of your own challenges with your peers.

Pre-work:
Please take approximately 20-30 minutes to do some light reflective writing on the below 3 questions. You do not have to answer all of the questions, but please answer at least one. We don’t expect you to write any more than half a page, and we would discourage you from going further than that.
Please submit your response here by Wednesday, January 11th.
  • Think about a challenge you’re experiencing at work that you’d like some support thinking through. What is frustrating you, and what is it getting in the way of?
  • What is a challenge that faced at work (either this role, or a prior one) that you’re proud of how you overcame it? What happened, what did you do, and what was the result?
  • Think about a time you gave comfort or advice to someone else experiencing a work challenge (colleague, partner, classmate, mentee). What was the problem they were facing (in broad terms)? What did you tell them? How did things go for them after that?

Getting Started with Your Data Literacy Program
With Data Literacy as one of the emerging capabilities of the Digital Economy, this session outlines how to get started with creating a Data Literacy Program-spanning engagement, development and enablement activities. Given the nascent nature of Data Literacy, this session provides a glimpse into how others are pioneering DL programs- from initial bootstrap work to fully scaled programs.

This DL 103 session builds on the DL 101 session that defined data literacy and the case for change (organizationally and individually), as well as the DL 102 session that explored individual data literacy and the 20 Data Literacy Essentials.

Pre-work:
  1. Attendees that did not attend the Data Literacy 101 Session, should review the Data Literacy 101 slide deck.
  2. Attendees that did not attend the Data Literacy 102 session should review the materials. A brief recap of key DL101 and DL102 topics will also be included.
  3. As you review the materials, part of the session will be to support you in your 1-page narrative on data literacy. In preparation for that, please craft your “what is data literacy” definition and some notes on “why data literacy matters” to your org and the folks you’ll work with. During the session, we will support you in completing the executive summary for your data literacy strategy.

Welcome and Quantitative Program Evaluation Tools for Educational Contexts
This session offers an overview of the principles of program evaluation and its application in education research. Participants will review common quantitative analytic approaches, discuss principles of causal inference, and apply these insights to determine when causal inference is needed and how causal estimates can be recovered given varying program contexts. Participants will then apply these tools to their own research questions.

Pre-work:
  1. Read chapters 5 & 6 from The Effect, by Nick Huntington-Klein, on identification and causal diagrams
  2. Bring a research question (causal or descriptive, capstone project or other project) to the session

Education Data Ethics (All Day Session)
The rapid pace of data innovation has not been matched by a parallel growth in the analysis of the ethical implications of our work. Data analytics has been long conceived to be value-neutral, a technocrat's endeavor. However, working with education data is ultimately a human endeavor, beset with choices that will have real implications for students, educators, and families.

The most important and challenging choices SDP fellows will face are not necessarily about coding or models, nor will they be straight-forward options between good and bad. This session will focus on four traditional frames of ethical deliberation and apply them to common data ethics scenarios. SDP Fellows will attend one of the following breakout sessions.

Ethics of Gaming – Michael LaMont, Cohort 7 on the Atlanta Public Schools Cheating Scandal

Ethics of Experimentation – Cara Jackson, Cohort 5 on when it is okay and not okay to experiment with students

Ethics of Privacy – Marika Pfefferkorn, Twin Cities Innovation Alliance to present on data sharing early warning indicator data across public agencies

Pre-Work:
As your pre-work for the Data Ethics module, please accept 3 $10 Donors Choose gifts that you can distribute to any project(s) you want. Donors Choose is a nonprofit organization that allows you to donate directly to public school classroom projects.

Your first step is to search Donors Choose for the projects you wish to invest in. Then, find your name in the spreadsheet below and use the three assigned gift codes next to your name to make three ten-dollar donations. You can allocate all of them in any configuration (all to one project, for example), but they must be in 10$ increments. Add the name of the project you supported with each code and the link to the cause. Enjoy!

Monitoring Educational Equity: Conceptual and Statistical Tools
A 2019 report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics advocated for a system of equity indicators for educational agencies. Many researchers, states, and agencies have embraced this call to measure and track not only disparities in educational outcomes but also access to resources and opportunities.

In this workshop, Andrew Ho will review conceptual and statistical tools for designing and constructing these systems. What is monitoring? Why should it improve teaching and learning? Which indicators are important to measure? How should we scale, combine, and present indicators? How can measurement scales and composite indices, developed using factor analytic models and principal components analysis, respectively, improve the validity of the interpretations these systems support? Attendees should leave with a coherent conceptual framework and selected statistical tools for constructing equity monitoring systems.

Data Science for Education: Opportunities and Challenges
New sources and scales of data have increasingly become relevant to the education sector. From large-scale datasets collected by the government; click-stream data generated by various online learning platforms; and collections of unstructured text, speech, and video captured in physical learning environments. The depth and breadth of today’s data in combination with novel methodologies for their analysis have created numerous opportunities for discovery and improvement of the education system. At the same time, we are only just yet beginning to develop the necessary infrastructure and resources for this work. And, ethical questions about privacy, interpretation, and implementation are more important than ever. In this talk, I’ll be speaking about these promises and challenges of data science for education research and practice.

How to Conduct Inclusive Research & Evaluation Through a DEI Lens
With the murder of George Floyd and the inequities to access healthcare during the height of the global health pandemic, the summer of 2020 called for a national reckoning of how Americans experience social injustices due to race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. More specifically, higher education presidents and K-12 school leaders immediately responded with equity initiatives to ensure such inequalities are not replicated in education systems across the nation.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) continues to be a priority for many educational leaders to ensure education is living up to its promise as the key to unlock opportunities towards socioeconomic mobility – where research and evaluation play key roles in these efforts. Prioritizing research agendas that advance equity for all, including BIPOC and others who have been historically disadvantaged, marginalized, and adversely affected by persistent poverty and inequality is the emerging standard. The problem is that many educational leaders do not know how to conduct research and evaluation from this equity lens. Drawing from the knowledge and experiences of attendees, the instructor will co-create a highly engaging workshop that bridges theory and practice to empower higher education and K-12 leaders with actionable strategies to conduct research and evaluation through a DEI lens.
